Can you do a marathon or ultra-marathon in a week? Yes! And for a good cause

Can you run and walk almost two marathons per week? How about one? How about a 5K? I ran and walked over 44 miles in a week (and that’s just what the app recorded when I had my phone on me and when it detected the movement well which it does not always detect 100%). I forgot to turn it off for a few days then decided to wait and see what the week would bring. I’m so grateful to feel well eating a whole food plant based diet and to be able to run, walk, and lift no matter how slow a runner I may be (I’m a fast walker though 🙂.)

Charity Miles is a free app. You can turn it on when you work out then again throughout your day then press “finish” and a company sponsoring your movement donates to a charity of your choice. For me, it’s Special Olympics for athletes with disabilities. It costs me nothing and I workout and move throughout the day anyway so why not do this too? It’s a win-win!

Oh—and I earned the Marathon Badge. 🙂

Food Addiction and Food As An Idol—Short Book review/excerpts

Breaking The Stronghold Of Food

By Rev. and Mrs. Michael and Nancy Brown who both released weight following Dr. Fuhrman’s Nutritarian Whole Food Plant Based diet and lifestyle and are now healthier and better able to fulfill the missions that God has set for them.

So far it is a great read and I can really relate! I also liked Made To Crave by Lynda Terkhurst as I felt it covered some of these issues of food sadly being an idol sometimes and how we should remember that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. But the Browns’ book takes it even higher in this discussion as well as giving people an answer to fight these deadly cravings by following a research proven, practical way to beat food addiction, reach an ideal weight, and obtain optimal health.

“ARE WE “DIGGING our own graves with forks and knives,” as a leading doctor claims?1 A new study “reveals that obesity is linked to very high rates of chronic illnesses— higher than living in poverty, and much higher than smoking or drinking.”2 Have we adequately considered the health risks of obesity, not to mention the spiritual side of obesity?”

“I do not want to lay a guilt trip on anyone, and if you are overweight or aware that your diet is unhealthy, you probably feel bad enough already. So the last thing I want to do is make you feel even worse. Instead, I want to talk with you heart-to-heart, encouraging you to consider whether there might be a serious spiritual dimension to unhealthy eating.”

“Do you have food addictions? If so, what are they? Confess them to the Lord as sinful and destructive.”

Running Stronger—Weight Lifting

Nini and I continue our backyard running! I had to add two full-body strength training days because I was starting to neglect that for the Running which makes me feel awesome. But the weight lifting makes me stronger and helps with the Running so therefore helps me feel awesome so I’m back on track with it. 🙂 I’m going to need to save up and invest in side-by-side treadmills for the icy days that are sure to come!

Back in the Yard

We got up at 5 as usual and did our before school run in the yard. We loved running in the streets of Boston with a group and Nini really felt comfortable especially because we ran together using a tether. But it was freeing I think to just be in the small yard, tether-free, quiet except for our occasional chatter, saying hi to the next door neighbor heading out, listening to early morning planes flying above, listening to music as we do our run/walk intervals, and hearing the stop announcements and engine from the nearby public transportation bus up front.

Results By God’s Grace

The picture on the left showed up in my Facebook memories timeline from 6 years ago today. I was 120+ pounds heavier, suffered from gallstones and gallbladder attacks, GERD (acid reflux) for which I was taking meds, depression, and chronic back pain. The picture on the right is me finishing a 5K with my younger daughter yesterday.

5K Official Results–The Play Brigade 5K 10/14/2017

5K official results:

Nini–43:08

Nalida: 42:58

I just wanted us to finish in the 90 minutes we were given. I’m still a slow runner and sometimes I slow Nini down and at other times encourage her to keep going and not peter out. 🙂 Honestly, she “guided” me for most of the race because she’s usually a step ahead and I’m saying “over to the right a bit, left, right.” 🙂 But right near the finish line I encouraged her when she got really tired. I said “Nini, I can see the Finish Line! That big blue sign ahead! Do you hear them cheering?! That’s because we’re so close to the finish line. We can’t stop running now can we?! Let’s do this.” And just like that, Nini perked up and even picked up speed. So we have official numbers and I’m so proud of Nini!! But the numbers can’t explain the hard work and where we came from to even get on this race course. I’m eternally grateful.

Run And Not Be Weary

Nini and I are heading out for our 1-mile walk to the train station then to run The Play Brigade 5K for Inclusion. Looks like the temps are a little lower than predicted (Yay!) so we’re wearing sweaters that we’ll be checking in before the race. Grateful to be able to move!

My Husband’s Journey

It is so exciting and I feel so blessed that my husband has owned his own Whole Food Plant Based Nutritarian journey and is not just riding along. I started in July 2013. To have him fully on board is an answer to prayer! Since May 2017 when he went full in, Michael has lost over 50 pounds already AND high blood pressure. His BP has been normal withOUT meds since August 27th. Last night’s reading was 97/77! What he and our family have gained are so much more! I’m so proud of him!

P.S. He’s wearing the same jeans in both pics which are WAY too big for him now. He has newer jeans that are getting too big too.

Big Results

The first picture is about 6 years ago and showed up on my timeline. The physical transformation still happening is great. But what’s greater is the mental and spiritual changes still happening.
